History of Double Creek Church of Christ

**updated August 8, 2024

The first first gathering of Christians that later became known as Double Creek Church of Christ took place in 1870.  According to records and stories handed down through the generations, these first meetings took place in various homes of the members, like the eary church recorded in the New Testament.  The first church building was erected in 1896 in the Double Creek Community and served the congregation for eight years.  In a deed dated April 29, 1903, land was donated to the church by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Hancock.  In 1904 the structure that has become the current building was erected.  The building began as a slab structure and has had many changes, as well as additions throughout its history.  Those additions include adding classrooms, covering the building with brick in 1959, adding a basement and front porch, and also a baptistery in 1970.

For many years the church basement served as the gathering place for the fellowship meals, special get-togethers and such, but by the late 1980's the group gatherings had outgrown the space.  So it was decided to build a new fellowship hall as an addition to the church building.  In 1989, a fellowship hall was added to the left side of the church which included a kitchen area, a dining area and the addition of two new restrooms.  It was a great addition to the church and was appreciated by everyone, but in time this space also became too small.  There was now a need for larger and better equipped classrooms, as well as more parking spaces to accomodate Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, and all church gatherings.

So, in 2009 the old fellowship hall was turned into classrooms and a new fellowship hall was added on the right side of the church with additional classrooms, giving Double Creek the look it has now.  When the project was complete the church had 11 large classrooms, 4 in the old fellowship hall area and 7 in the basement of the new addition, a large fewllowship hall on the 1st floor that will accomodate approximately 150 people, new restrooms on each level, along with 16 additional parking spaces in the parking lot.  This fellowship hall has been the site for many great meals, moments, and times of fellowship.

The communion table and the two chairs on each side of the table in the church were built by Preacher S. L. Hoffman, a former minister at the church.  Having only one arm he was still able to do all the work himself.  That is, until it came time to place the letters on the table which read, "IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME".  Hoffman's wife assisted him by holding the letters in place while he secured them.

Double Creek Church of Christ is a beautiful church.  It has a very unique and beautiful entryway into the sanctuary where people love to stand and chat before and after services.  This church is not only beautiful on the outside, it is the people inside the congregation that make Double Creek Church of Christ one of the most beautiful and loving churches you will ever attend.  Everyone who comes through the doors is welcomed with smiles and the love of Jesus Christ.
